Indian wicketkeeper batsman Dinesh Karthik has enjoyed the role of the finisher off later. After playing several dominating innings in the Indian Premier League, the veteran batter was called back into the national team, and made an impact straightaway in the South Africa series.

Against the West Indies it was no different as Karthik once again showed his skill set, hitting 41 runs off just 19 balls. Coming into bat very late in the innings, Karthik hit four boundaries and two sixes, to get India to a strong position in a wicket that did not look easy to bat on.

After the commencement of the game, Karthik was awarded the player of the match. Speaking at the presentation, Karthik said that he has been enjoying the finisher’s role a lot.

“The wicket was a little sticky. Was not a good wicket to start on but once set, you got the pace of the wicket and you realised what kind of shots you can play. I have been enjoying it (finisher’s role) a lot. It is a very interesting role. It is not something that you can be very consistent with but on the days, you can make an impact on the team. You need the backing of the captain and coach and I have got that in abundance,” he said.

Asked about his process in the final overs of the game, Karthik said that one had to be very aware of his surroundings.

“Assessing the wicket is important. On any given day, the last three-four overs that you bat, you need to be aware of a lot of things such as the shape of the ball, the softness of the ball, the wicket, and then you need to decide These are a little bit of things and that comes with a little bit of practice,” he concluded his statement.
