Number three seed Ons Jabeur has become the first Arab woman to reach a Grand Slam singles semifinal after she rallied from a set down to beat Marie Bouzkova on centre court at Wimbledon.

A year after becoming the first Arab woman to reach the quarterfinals, Jabeur has moved one step further this year. She made a stunning comeback and dispatched Bouzkova 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 on Tuesday (July 5).

Talking about her historic feat, Jabeur revealed her conversation with the former four-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist Hicham Arazi.

“I was talking a little bit to Hicham Arazi, and he told me, ‘Arabs always lose in the quarterfinals and we are sick of it. Please break this.’ I was, like, ‘I’ll try, my friend,’ … We were just texting, and he was really happy. He was, like, ‘Thank you for finally making the semifinal. Now you can really go and get the title.’,” Jabeur said after her victory in the quarterfinal.

She added that she had been wanting to break the curse for a long time. “I was hoping that I could get to this stage for a long time already.”

Jabeur will meet first-time semifinalist Tatjana Maria for a place in the final at the Championships. Maria, too, came from a set down to win her quarterfinal match against Jule Niemeier. Jabeur and Maria will meet each other for the first time in four years.
